This BYOD session will help attendees gain hands-on experience using MyBigCampus to enhance collaboration and communication within and beyond the classroom walls. This includes reviewing and submitting content to the MyBigCampus resource library that might otherwise be inaccessible to your school because of Web filtering technologies. More than just a classroom management system, MyBigCampus provides an extensive social media library of educational resources reviewed and submitted by real teachers and students from YouTube, Wikipedia, and other sources. Conversations about online citizenship, and awareness CAN take place in the classroom without compromising safety or CIPA compliance, and technologies like MyBigCampus make this possible. Participants in this session will leave with additional ideas for integrating a more complete understanding of digital citizenship into their own curriculum.

This poster session looks at how virtual worlds and other advanced social media can be used to encourage creativity and critical thinking in the English/Language Arts classroom, particularly for middle school and high school. Virtual world experiences such as the Stonehenge and Valley of the Kings simulations developed by the Heritage Key historical foundation (http://heritage-key.com/) can be used to spark creative thought and excitement, especially for those students who respond favorable to games and game-based learning opportunities. With problem-based curriculum designed to capitalize on creative writing and response, working within such environments can help students bridge the gap between literature, history, and other subjects and their own experiences. This session is based on research done during my doctoral program and on the experiences of faculty and students at Purdue University Calumet in teaching English within the virtual world Second Life.
